Most Favorable day for Grihpravesh or Grahpravesam

  • Best Days: Vasant Panchami, Akshaya Tritiya, Gudi Padwa, Dussehra (also known as Vijayadashmi)
  • Avoid: Uttarayana, Holi, Adhikmas, Soonya Mas and Shraddha Paksha
  • Normally all days except Tuesday are good for Grihpravesh Puja
  • Dvitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi and Trayodashi of Shukla Paksha are auspicious for Housewarming ceremony
  • Amavasya and Purnima, are considered inauspicious for Griha Pravesh ceremony

Best Month for Grihpravesh Puja or House Warming Puja

  • Best Months: Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha
  • Avoid: Chaturmas, i.e. during the month of Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada and Ashwin

Dos and don’ts for performing a Griha Pravesh

  • Ensure house is complete before house warming puja or grahpravesam
  • The house should be empty of all furniture until Griha Parvesh puja is done, except gas stove
  • The main door should be decorated with auspicious symbols like a swastika and Laxmi feet, drawn on the threshold
  • A toran (holy hanging), made of fresh mango leaves and marigold flowers, should be hung on the doorway
  • In first ritual, a Kalash (copper pot) is filled with water and 9 types of grains and a coin are placed in it.
  • A coconut is placed on the pot and one enters the house with it, accompanied by the chanting of mantras by a panditji
  • Enter with the right foot first, it is believed it brings prosperity
  • Break a coconut, which signifies the removal of the obstacles
  • The temple in the house should be placed in the east direction of the house and should be fixed on day of the house warming
  • The Vastu Purush and other deities are worshipped
  • Milk is boiled to signify importance of kitchen
  • Shankh (conch shells) are normally blown to ward off evil spirits
  • Do not leave house empty for at least three days after the puja is done
  • Don’t perform puja when lady of the house is pregnant or a death has taken place recently in the family
  • To purify house, normally holy water from the kalash is sprinkled
  • A homa/havan is performed. It is said it purifies and cleanse the surroundings
